Tonne für Tonne - ton for ton
Forests, known for their carbon sequestration capacity, are often used for corporate carbon offset investments. Marketed as the earth's green lungs, forests have become a tradable asset. Kiki Astner critically examines the effectiveness of this 'ton for ton' method of decarbonising 'unavoidable' emissions in Austria and proposes an alternative conservation communication strategy. The project aims to promote scientific monitoring and support Austria's 145,000 small forest owners by providing them with a simple tool to seek help in the climate crisis. This takes the form of a 'Yellow Pages' book that holds contact details of people who can provide information on forest-related funding, education and counselling. Distributed through communities and acting as an intermediary, it fosters a collective sense of decision-making through conversation.
